Meet ... Wilma

Bushfire update 6 February 2006: we hadn't seen Wilma for some months when the fire came through. Last time she was seen she was moving south, with Blaze to an area full of tea-tree which is difficult to search. We never saw either of them again. They were both elderly, and had lived as neighbours a large part of their lives (at least five years) and I think they went off together to die. I am happy that they were spared the trauma of the fire, and that they had each other.

Wilma is a real star! She was so friendly and relaxed that she came down her tree to say 'hello' and encourage us to take her photo. Perhaps she knew that she was due to be featured on the front of our Savannah Walkabout brochure, posters and the website.

Wilma is one of our old ladies - she was possibly born around 1992 or even earlier. Her nose is a bit faded - a sign of age, with a distinctive pattern of white in the nostrils. Also she has a nick in her left ear - maybe she once had an ear tag? Wilma is so relaxed. She has seen everything in her life (except an umbrella - first time she saw one she was most interested!). She is unflappable.
