Koala ResearchMeet ... EurekaThis young lady was one of the first koalas we met on that first day in the You Yangs during the bushfires in the nearby Brisbane Ranges. We were so upset and frightened, and couldn't do anything to help up there, so finding Eureka was a precious discovery. Hence her name - Eureka - a great word that has come to suggest "freedom" in Australia, as well as "a wonderful discovery".Eureka was not all that keen on us at first though! She was easily frightened, and we were very quiet and gentle with her. Now, she is relaxing with us, and just the other day she allowed me (alone) to approach to within a few metres of her. She watched me carefully, but didn't show signs of distress, and didn't climb up the tree away from me - though she had ample opportunity. She has the most distinctive nose pattern! White spots all over! www.echidnawalkabout.com.au |
